This Week in the YPU: Professor Daniel Markovits

Dear Members and Friends of the Yale Political Union,

Thank you to all who joined us last Tuesday as we debated Resolved: Tear Down the Wall with Todd Miller. The motion failed by a margin of 9.

On Tuesday, February 21st at 7:30pm, the Yale Political Union will host Professor Daniel Markovits to debate “Resolved: Meritocracy Has No Merit in Sudler Hall (WLH 201). Reach out to the Speaker (Anna Martinelli-Parker), the Floor Leader of the Right (Daniel Hannell), or the Floor Leader of the Left (AJ Tapia-Wylie) if you are interested in speaking on the docket.

Professor Daniel Markovits is the Guido Calabresi Professor of Law at the Yale Law School. He has written extensively on topics such as meritocracy, the philosophical foundations of private law, and behavioral economics. He is perhaps best known for his book The Meritocracy Trap, where he argues that meritocracy is central to rising economic inequality and social and political dysfunction.

Prior to Tuesday’s debate, the Union will host a dinner with Professor Markovits for a small group of students. Please fill out this form to indicate your interest in attending by 5pm on Monday.

This Saturday, February 25th, the Social Chair will be hosting a YPU Scavenger Hunt from noon to 4pm. The starting location will be Old CampusParties will compete to see who knows the Union, the university, and their histories the best. There will be a $100 cash prize for the winning Party and the top 3 contestants will win YPU mugs! Sign up on this form and meet us on Old Campus to compete.

The Federalist Party will be debating Resolved: Create Parallel Institutions”on Wednesday, February 22 at 8:00pm. (Contact: marcos.barrios@yale.edu).

The Conservative Party will be debating Resolved: That Man Cannot Be Trusted With His Own Freedom” on Thursday, February 23 at 7:30pm at at 34 Lynwood Place. (Contact: simon.bazelon@yale.edu).

The Tory Party will be hosting a joint debate with the Independent Party on Resolved: Mythologize the Founders on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:30pm in the Pierson Fellow’s Lounge. (Contact: anouk.schembri@yale.edu).
