This Week in the YPU: Sandy Baum

January 31, 2023

When I questioned your pupil, under a pine-tree,

“My teacher,” he answered, “went for herbs,

But toward which corner of the mountain,

How can I tell, through all these clouds?”

— Jia Dao (779—843 AD)

Dear Members and Friends of the Yale Political Union,

Thank you to all who joined us last Tuesday as we debated “Resolved: Nationalism Breeds Tyranny” with Professor Jason Stanley and Professor Timothy Snyder. By a vote of 9-36-1, the negative prevailed. The org speeches and the lively discourse has warmly filled Sudler Hall with laughter and enthusiasm as we look towards the rest of the semester.

On Tuesday, January 31th at 7:30pm, the Yale Political Union will host Dr. Sandy Baum to debate “Resolved: Yale Will Not Level the Playing Field” in Sudler Hall (WLH 201). Reach out to the Speaker (Anna Martinelli-Parker), the Floor Leader of the Right (Daniel Hannell), or the Floor Leader of the Left (AJ Tapia-Wylie) if you are interested in speaking on the docket.

Dr. Sandy Baum is a senior fellow in the Center on Education Data and Policy at the Urban Institute and professor emerita of economics at Skidmore College. A higher-education policy analyst, she writes on access to college, student aid policy, and student debt. She has extensively analyzed the merits and limitations of higher education (and various surrounding policies, such as universal student debt forgiveness) for eliminating socioeconomic inequality.

Prior to Tuesday’s debate, the Union will host a dinner with Dr. Baum for a small group of students. Please fill out this form to indicate your interest in attending by 5pm on Monday.

Beginning this week, you may find whip sheets of the Yale Political Union in residential college dining halls. The whip sheet summarizes the past week’s proceedings in the Union and provides information on this week’s events. Be sure to pick up a copy when you get the chance!

Warmly,
Jean Wang (they/them)
President of the Yale Political Union
