This Week in the YPU: Timothy Snyder & Jason Stanley

January 22, 2023

Dear Members and Friends of the Yale Political Union,

On Tuesday, January 24th at 7:30pm, the Yale Political Union will host Professors Timothy Snyder & Jason Stanley to debate “Resolved: Nationalism Breeds Tyranny” in Sudler Hall (WLH 201). This debate is the Organizational Debate that opens the semester, and the Chairs and Chairmen of the Union’s seven constituent Parties will present passionate speeches to introduce their respective Party to the body. Reach out to the Speaker (Anna Martinelli-Parker), the Floor Leader of the Right (Daniel Hannell), or the Floor Leader of the Left (AJ Tapia-Wylie) if you are interested in speaking on the docket.

Professor Timothy Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale. A scholar of 20th-century eastern European history, he has written widely on topics ranging from tyranny and mass violence, nationhood and national identity, and eastern European history as global history and its implications for modernity.

Professor Jason Stanley is the Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale. He applies philosophy of language and epistemology to political theory, and writes on propaganda, fascism, and the interrelation between language, ideology, and power. As the two professors will be debating each other, we are looking for resolutions on which they will disagree; they have expressed interest in discussing nationalism.

Prior to Tuesday’s debate, the Union will host a dinner with Professor Snyder and Professor Stanley for a small group of students. Please fill out this form to indicate your interest in attending by 5pm on Monday.

As the campus becomes renewed with rush and activity in the January wind, I am eager to welcome you back to the floor of the Yale Political Union. Whether you are a newcomer to the Union or a Party elder, I hope to see you in Sudler Hall this Tuesday.
